Michael Cassel

Executive Producer

Michael Cassel is an internationally recognised producer and entertainment executive, with credits including major theatrical productions, concerts, televised and special events.

Cassel represents Cameron Mackintosh in Australia and is Executive Producer of his acclaimed new production of Les Misérables which will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne in June 2014.

Cassel’s ten-year tenure with Disney Theatrical Group, the live entertainment division of The Walt Disney Company, saw him hold a series of increasingly responsible senior management positions at the company in both the United States and Australia, most recently as Director, International based in New York City.

In this role, Cassel was responsible for the division’s international live entertainment activities, negotiating complicated contracts and royalty deals, developing new markets and producing the company’s Broadway stage productions including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, AIDA, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid and High School Musical. Cassel also supported Disney on Ice and Disney Live! licensed to Feld Entertainment, in international markets. In addition, Cassel oversaw the company’s second class and stock and amateur licensing initiatives with Music Theatre International.

Highlights included launching new productions of The Lion King in Australia, China, South Africa, Taiwan and Singapore and, as Associate Producer, mounting new productions of Beauty and the Beast in South Africa, Brazil and Argentina and AIDA in Korea and Japan.

Upon returning home to Australia, Cassel joined Global Creatures as Head of International and Creative Affairs, working across the company’s slate of projects including Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular, How To Train Your Dragon, the Australasian premiere of War Horse and the development of productions including Strictly Ballroom and King Kong.

Cassel has produced prestigious award ceremonies and television broadcasts including Musicoz televised on Channel [V], the David Koch Australian My Business Awards, the Yellow Pages Awards for Excellence in Tourism, Country Press Association of NSW Centenary Awards and the Integral Energy Business Awards. Other concerts and major events include Aim for the Stars for world-champion surfer, Layne Beachley, the Purple Ribbon Masked Ball, the Australia Day Spectacular and fireworks sky show for the NSW Australia Day Council. For ten years, Cassel originated and produced the Carols by Candlelight Christmas Spectacular a live concert event attended by over 15,000 people.

Cassel commenced his professional career working with Australia’s foremost entertainment entrepreneur and celebrity manager, Harry M Miller and worked as an agent across the company’s stable of clients including former Australian Prime Minister, The Honourable Gough Whitlam, broadcaster Alan Jones AO, Australian fashion icon Maggie Tabberer, media identity Deborah Hutton, Thredbo landslide survivor Stuart Diver, and Lindy Chamberlain.

Cassel currently serves on the Executive Council of Live Performance Australia, the peak body for Australia’s live entertainment and performing arts industry.
