The revolving stage and barricades were designed by John Napier. Director Trevor Nunn knew the musical had to be "a constant chase, that has to have, throughout, a sense of perpetual motion..." The idea for the barricades came to Napier on a trip to Paris:
"We visited the Victor Hugo Museum, but also wandered the streets where the barricades, the revolutions had taken place. We soaked up the atmosphere of the old Paris, the rue Saint Antoine, the Bastille District. Like a shot out of the blue -that second morning in Paris, we were talking, endlessly, about major problems: how do you achieve the barricades on stage? An idea suddenly came to me-what you see on stage is basically that idea..."
The costumes were designed by Andreane Neofitou.
"I feel I'm not a costumier, I make characters... Because of this, I work with the actors, we develop the character through what he's doing on stage. A lot of work is immersion into a given period. If you store enough information in your head, then, hopefully, when you characterize someone, you know how they should look."
The lighting was designed by David Hersey, the award winning lighting designer of Cats, Evita, Starlight Express and Miss Saigon.
