Educational resource packs have been developed, with the help of teachers, for two of the most recognised and popular musicals of all time - Les Misérables - covering Key Stages 3 and 4 including GNVQ and A level. These extensive packs, designed to complement a visit to the musicals themselves, contain project and background work for use in the classroom and satisfy GCSE curriculum requirements.
Les Misérables Workshop at the Prince of Wales Theatre
1 hour workshop which envelops the history of the musical, the directorial and design concept, aspects of stagecraft seen in the musical.
Brief introduction to story, demonstrated by costume/prop and key flyboards.
Followed by a practical workshop where students re-enact a pastiche of the Barricade scene (or similar) using theatre games as a base for understanding scenario and the production. During this practical, students also come to understand such components as the use of actors on a revolve stage. This workshop actively encourages team building and co-operative skills.
Suitable for all age ranges and disabilities and not requiring any performing arts ability.
Students receive a worksheet at end of workshop to take to the performance from which they gain extra pointers and understanding by 'looking out for' specific aspects.
Outcome - active engagement in a live performance and active participation in a fun learning practical approach to stagecraft.
Backstage tours can be booked in conjunction with school visits to Les Misérables. These run on Wednesday mornings at 10.30am, 11.30am and 12.30pm and give a fascinating insight into how a West End musical is produced and how spectacular stage effects are achieved.
