DAVID FISHER, THE ACCLAIMED ISRAELI SINGING STAR, TO ASSUME THE ROLE OF JEAN VALJEAN IN LES MISÉRABLES ON BROADWAY BEGINNING NOVEMBER 2nd AT THE IMPERIAL THEATER
September 2, 1993-David Fisher, the acclaimed Israeli singer who for years performed as a cantor in Israel, will assume the role of Jean Valjean in the Broadway production of Les Misérables beginning Tuesday, November 2 at the Imperial Theater (249 West 45th Street). Mr. Fisher played Valjean for over 600 performances between 1987 and 1989 in the original Tel Aviv production of Les Misérables, for which he received unanimous critical acclaim.
David Fisher was born in Israel, the son of Holocaust survivors. His love for music developed through his relationship with his grandfather, who was a cantor. Fisher followed in his grandfather's footsteps and became one of Israel's premiere cantors, performing and winning top honors in The Hassidic Festival, the Yiddish Festival and the Festival of Jerusalem, among others. He made his theatrical debut with Les Misérables in 1987 in the original Tel Aviv production of the musical.
In 1989, Cameron Mackintosh invited Mr. Fisher to join Les Misérables cast members from around the world in a special command performance for the Queen of England. Mr. Fisher has since performed in Russia, Poland, in Thailand for the Royal Family, and at the 1992 Vienna Festival.
Mr. Fisher is also a highly successful recording artist, having released over 10 albums. His latest recording, "Showstoppers," will be released by Pickwick this fall.
