Oscar-nominated John Cameron created the orchestral score for every version of Les Misérables between 1979 and 2005 from the original Robert Hossein production in 1980 through the Royal Shakespeare Company, Broadway, tour and concert versions, winning the New York Drama Desk Award for Orchestration in 1986 and the National Broadway Theatre Award in 2002. The New York cast album won a Grammy as did the Les Miserables Symphonic album. He was nominated for an Olivier award as co-composer of Zorro the Musical. Other shows he has arranged include Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (currently revived at the Palladium) & Honk at the Royal National Theatre. Also at the RNT he composed music for John Caird’s Hamlet, starring Simon Russell-Beale. In 2014, Nils’ Wonderful Adventure a musical in Mandarin Chinese, with music and original English lyrics by John, won a Golden Lion Award in China for Best Children’s Musical.
As a composer, John’s 50+ movie scores Include the Oscar nominated score for A Touch of Class, The Ruling Class, the British classic Kes, The Mirror Crack’d, To End All Wars (conducting the LSO) and the Emmy Nominated score for The Path to 9-11.
His songwriting hits include Agnetha Faltskog’s If I Thought You’d Ever Change Your Mind, Sweet Inspiration and Tap Turns On The Water.
John’s concert works include the cantata Missa Celtica recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra and the choir of New College Oxford and Tara’s Brooch, a string quartet premiered at the Cadogan Hall London, and recently a song cycle Cante Jondo, setting Lorca’s Sigueriya poems for soprano Marie Angel. Recording artists John has worked with include Jose Carreras, Joseph Calleja, Donovan, Hot Chocolate, Heatwave and his own band CCS.
As well as developing the songs and the score for Mister Mayfair, a movie trilogy, John is currently working as composer/lyricist on four different Music Theatre projects, from Hard Times that he and John Caird are developing for Lorne Campbell and Northern Stage, Ruth The Musical (the story of Ruth Ellis) recently presented at The Actors Church, In Another Century, a love story set during the Easter Uprising in Dublin, and an as yet unnamed Kung Fu extravaganza.
