Cameron Mackintosh announced today casting for the second year of the UK and Ireland tour of his acclaimed production of the Boublil and Schönberg musical “LES MISÉRABLES”. From 18 November 2019 Dean Chisnall will play ‘Jean Valjean’, Nic Greenshields ‘Javert’, Katie Hall ‘Fantine’, Ian Hughes ‘Thénardier’, Felix Mosse ‘Marius’, Frances Mayli McCann 'Eponine', Charlie Burn ‘Cosette’, Barnaby Hughes ‘Enjolras’ and Helen Walsh ‘Madame Thénardier’.

Also in the cast will be Joseph Anthony, George Arvidson, Will Barratt, Adam Boardman, Rebecca Bolton, Olivia Brereton, Danny Colligan, Rebecca Ferrin, Aimee Good, Jenna Innes, Ebony Jonelle, Connor Jones, Tessa Kadler, Damian Kneale, Joseph McDonnell, Robert Madge, Liam Marcellino, Emily Owens, Jordan Simon Pollard, Corrinne Priest, Jamie Pritchard, Aaron Pryce-Lewis, Dean Read and Janne Snellen. 

Further 2020 dates were also announced today with “LES MISÉRABLES” now confirmed to play Bristol Hippodrome (7 April – 9 May 2020), Glasgow Theatre Royal (3 – 27 June 2020), Leeds Grand Theatre (23 July – 15 August 2020), Dublin Bord Gais Energy Theatre (25 August – 12 September 2020) Canterbury Marlowe Theatre (25 September – 24 October 2020) and Hull New Theatre (28 October - 21 November 2020). 

Since Cameron Mackintosh first conceived this new production of “Les Misérables” in 2009 to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary it has taken the world by storm. Originally touring the UK throughout 2009/10, and concluding with 22 performances at the Barbican, this production was hailed by audiences and critics alike.

Now this UK and Ireland tour, embraced by modern audiences across the globe as a Les Mis for the 21st century, has sold out in record breaking time in each venue it has played since opening in 2018.

This production inspired the hugely successful movie version starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne. This brilliant new staging has scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo,and has to date already been seen in North America, Brazil, Mexico, Korea, Japan, Canada, Australia, Spain, France, Manila, Singapore, Dubai and Broadway.

Boublil and Schönberg's magnificent score of “LES MISÉRABLES” includes the songs, “I Dreamed a Dream”, “On My Own”, “Stars”, “Bring Him Home”, “Do You Hear the People Sing?”, “One Day More”, “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables”, “Master Of The House” and many more.  Seen by over 120 million people worldwide in 52 countries and in 22 languages, “LES MISÉRABLES” is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular musicals.

Cameron Mackintosh’s production of “LES MISÉRABLES” is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg and is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. It has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, additional material by James Fenton and original adaptation by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The original “LES MISÉRABLES” orchestrations are by John Cameron with new orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke, Stephen Metcalfe and Stephen Brooker. The production is directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell, designed by Matt Kinley inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo with costumes by Andreane Neofitou and Christine Rowland, lighting by Paule Constable, sound by Mick Potter, musical staging by Michael Ashcroft and Geoffrey Garratt, projections by Fifty-Nine Productions and music supervision by Stephen Brooker and Graham Hurman.

LES MISÉRABLES, the World’s longest running musical produced by Cameron Mackintosh, continues its astounding success into its 34^th year, confounding the British critics who dismissed it when it first opened.

The acclaimed New production was created for the show's 25th Anniversary in the UK in 2009 and has gone on to enjoy huge success around the world all over again, including returning to Broadway. The New touring production which has just opened to rave reviews in Dublin has already taken a record-breaking advance of over £30 million with most dates sold out until January 2020, including Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Plymouth. There are just a few seats remaining in Milton Keynes, Bradford, Newcastle and Liverpool.

Southampton goes on sale early in February and details of further UK and European dates will be announced shortly.

The Original 1985 production of LES MISÉRABLES can now only be seen at the Queen’s Theatre, London where it continues its record-breaking run, still playing to 95% capacity and nightly standing ovations. It previously played at the Barbican and Palace Theatres.  The recent Christmas weeks broke all box office records at the Queen’s.

LES MISÉRABLES and THE LION KING are the most financially successful productions in the history of the West End. Last year this production distributed a further 280% return of profit, giving the original investors a total return of over 3500% on their original investment - an unprecedented feat for any musical in its fourth decade.

LES MISÉRABLES has been performed in 52 countries and 22 languages and won over 100 international awards. The combined audience for the show and the Academy Award winning film is 120 million people. The film is one of the 10 biggest movie musical box office successes of all time.

The Original London production at the Queen’s Theatre will play until 13 July 2019.  The theatre will then close for four months of rebuilding work both backstage and in the auditorium as well as adding many much-needed new lavatories to the front of house. This work will restore architect W.G. Sprague’s original boxes and loges which, along with the entire front of house, were destroyed by a bomb in 1940 and caused the theatre to be closed for 20 years.

The restored Queen’s Theatre will reopen in December of 2019 with the New production of LES MISÉRABLES, continuing its phenomenal run indefinitely.  A brilliant company is now being put together and bookings will open in February.

While the Queen’s Theatre is being restored, LES MISÉRABLES will continue in performance on Shaftesbury Avenue with exciting plans being announced shortly for a four-month season at the Gielgud Theatre from the end of July 2019.

In America, the current tour of the New production, which is playing major cities across the US and Canada until 2021, continues to play to 95% attendance and has grossed over $250million at the box office to date.

Victor Hugo would have been amused by the social media storm created by the BBC’s “song-free” adaptation of the novel and thrilled that when NOTRE DAME DE PARIS, the musical version of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame returns to London later this month at the Coliseum (frequent home to his other much revived musical hit RIGOLETTO), he will have two musicals running in the West End!
