James was an actor for 12 years. He appeared in Les Misérables at the Palace Theatre, London, where he took over as Resident Director in 1996.
He worked on Mary Poppins as Associate Director on the original production in Bristol, London’s West End and Broadway. He has since gone on to direct both UK tours, as well as productions in Holland, Australia, Zurich, Dubai, Germany and Japan.
Since the original 2009 UK tour, James has been responsible for directing Les Misérables around the world, including Japan, Spain, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Korea, Germany, Dubai, New York and the current US tour. James has directed a concert version in Scandinavia and the 25th anniversary concert at London’s O2 Arena.
James has directed Dirty Dancing in London, Australia, Toronto, Utrecht, Berlin and two US tours.
Other works include: Batman Live (UK tour); The Witches of Eastwick, and Singin’ in the Rain at West Yorkshire Playhouse, where he was staff director; this production moved on to the Royal National Theatre, where it won an Olivier Award.
James is delighted to be directing this new tour of Les Mis.
